The type of bankruptcy (Chapter 7 or Chapter 13) can affect a debtors options. Under Chapter 7, the debtor does not have to make payments during the pendency of the bankruptcy case. Filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy may also allow a debtor to “strip” or eliminate the payments on your second or third mortgage. When the value of the home is less than the outstanding balance of the first mortgage, the Bankruptcy Court may remove the lien created by the second mortgage, and effectively convert the second or third mortgage into unsecuritized debt. Free help with tax returns on ‘Super Refund Saturday’

CASH Refund's super centers in Beaverton and Portland will help taxpayers prepare returns and file for refunds. Or, try out its new "self-prep" sites.

Benjamin Brink/The OregonianJoy Fauth, of Portland, got help last April 18 at the Lloyd Center CASH Oregon site. The nonprofit helps taxpayers statewide prepare and file returns for free. Its volunteers are available Saturday at Lloyd Center and in Beaverton.

CASH Oregon, a nonprofit that offers free help with tax returns, is hosting its first "Super Refund Saturday" event, co-sponsored by AARP Tax-Aide and KeyBank.

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers will be available at Lloyd Center Mall (Suite 2025) and the Beaverton Resource Center to help people fill out and file their returns.

That's right. Do your taxes and shop afterwards. You won't have your refund yet but you might know what it is.

Of course, you'll have to bring your W-2s, photo ID and other records.

CASH Oregon helped more than 17,500 taxpayers in the Portland area claim $21 million in refunds last year, executive director Rob Justus said. It used 433 IRS-certified volunteers to do it.

This year, to help serve more people, it's offering self-prep sites. Recent college grads and other taxpayers can do their own tax returns online with a volunteer overseeing their work. The aim is to help people get used to filing their own returns online, Justus said.

"It's something the IRS is really promoting," Justus said. "Our biggest issue, frankly, is capacity. Our numbers just continue to grow. We're trying to capture some folks who really in the end could be doing their own taxes online."

Vancouver-based Holland acquires 304-unit complex

Vancouver-based Holland Partner Group has teamed with HPK Multifamily LLC to acquire a 304-unit apartment complex in Kent, a deal financed with a $25 million loan through the Portland office of CBRE Capital Markets. Holland Partner Group and HPK obtained the loan at a fixed interest rate of 4.21 percent, according to a written statement from CBRE, which said it took less than three weeks to obtain the Freddie Mac financing.
